Deja Stowers – BLAQ is a local activist artist here in the Twin Cities. This past January, she founded the company “BLAQ” composed of 7 unapologetically Black women. BLAQ’s mission is to be themselves at all times. Therefore they have switched the word “performance” to “observance”. Their goal is to live life on “stage” and allow/gift others to observe them.
BLAQgospel: LAVISH is a new chapter to the larger piece BLAQgospel, first premiered at Intermedia Arts’ Underbelly. LAVISH focuses on the lives of the Black people killed by police. Because the news and media only highlights their death and depicts them as barbaric. We want to imagine how they lived and loved. And if we knew them, how WE would have known and loved them. This piece focuses on Tamir Rice (12), Michael Brown (18) and Korryn Gaines (23).
